Guess who else is working on Thanksgiving?

Are you working on Thanksgiving? Will you be one of the few and the proud workers keeping America running this Turkey Day?

Maybe you’ll be shivering outside a service station, salivating at the thought of grandma’s homemade beet casserole. Or perhaps you’re cooking in a diner, whipping up turkey burgers for hungry holiday travelers trapped from their homemade food comas by snow and sleet.

Well, we want to thank you. By and large, the brunt of the work done on Thanksgiving Day is performed by America’s hourly workers. And if you’re included in this lonely group, we wanted to let you know you have some company more than 200 miles above the earth.

That’s right, the three NASA residents of the international space station have already volunteered to put their turkey-flavored Tang on ice and make further preparations for the arrival of Space Shuttle Atlantis in early December. Talk about dedication. (But when you can’t get the football broadcasts on Thanksgiving, what else is there to do besides dishes, really?)

So remember, when you’re about to trash those leftover mashed potatoes or send the gravy to drift down the stream behind your house, throw them as high as you can into the sky. Maybe an astronaut will catch a break, and a snack.
