Beat the back-to-school blues with a new job
This year, it’s not the class bully who’s going to be stealing your lunch money. College and high school students will be paying more this fall for everything from books to the gas it takes to get to campus each morning. Food prices are up as well, which means old favorites in the dining hall like sloppy joes and corn dogs might cause meal plan prices to rise.
So when the moths start flying out of your wallet and you’re caught stealing your roommate’s leftovers from the fridge (even if that roommate is mom), part-time jobs are the perfect way to fill your backpack with Benjamins (and your stomach with your own food). Here are a few tips on how to get the right back-to-school job for you:
- Look for jobs with flexible scheduling, such as those with evening and weekend hours. You’ll need to work around your schedule of classes, sports practices and studying.
- Internships are all the rage these days, and many of them are paid. Try to find one that relates to your area of study so you can earn a paycheck as well as valuable experience in your career field.
- Leave yourself time to do fun things, like attend club meetings, hang out with friends or just relax in front of the TV. Believe it or not, you can have a job and still enjoy your college and high school experience.
Nobody wants to pay more for their back-to-school essentials, but with a part-time job, it’s possible for students to fund their education and the stuff they need to excel—like an adorable “Hang in there” kitten poster reminding you to stay focused and get your work done.
