Unemployment rose to 8.9% in April, according to the latest report from the BLS (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Nevertheless, slowly but surely there continue to be signs that this market may finally be turning around. According to the BLS, during April, average hourly earnings rose .4% to $19.48 – good news for those of you earning hourly paychecks. They also report that the jobless rates for Hispanics and Caucasians remained steady through April. This might not seem like a big deal – but when you consider that 5.7 million jobs have been lost since December 2007, a slowing in the number of unemployed may mean that the tide is turning.
Health care jobs
The health care industry is seeing some encouraging numbers as well. The BLS reports that over 17,000 new health care jobs were created in April. This is promising news for those of you getting your online degree in nursing.
Teen jobs
The unemployment rate for teenagers fell by .2% and is holding steady at 21.5%. This is great news for teens and students looking for summer jobs.
