Writers’ strike quandary: What if you walked off the set?

As the Writers Guild of America strike stretches into its third month, it’s already claimed a number of victims. Here are just a few:

• Hourly workers in the entertainment industry, from back lot caterers to dry cleaners and Hollywood hotdog vendors.
• Funny jokes – the kind that used to be featured on Letterman and “The Daily Show.”
• TV Guide subscribers.
• Reality TV haterz.
• People who liked writers.

Pondering the writers strikeBut enough about those smarty pants writers, their dark-rimmed glasses and those funny-looking hats. Besides the fact that their jobs fueled the jobs of many other innocent workers who are being written off as collateral damage, the only thing we’re really losing is entertainment. And we have books, mimes and Carrot Top to take care of that.

But what if everyone in a given hourly industry walked off the set without warning? If all the call center employees simultaneously hung up their headsets, who would help us when our computers froze? If the restaurant workers of America uniformly flung their aprons on the ground, does that mean we would actually have to cook for ourselves? And what if all the gas stations closed down in unison….well, do you still even know how to ride a bike???

We want to throw the question to you – America’s hourly and part-time workers (and everyone else who reads this blog). What do you think would happen to the rest of us, if tomorrow, you and all your co-workers across the country decided to throw in the towel? Total anarchy? Minor inconvenience? Or somewhere in between? And which industry walking off the job would have the worst impact on our society? Comment below…

What if all the garbage collectors quit and the dumps closed down? The rats would take over.

What if the grocery store delivery drivers of all our fresh produce and dietary goods decided to strike? America wake up. It’s 2008 — mediate, compensate & cooperate. Let’s all try to get along.

Did anyone ask the Writers Guild how well the strike worked out for everyone employed at Eastern Airlines? If you’ve never heard of Eastern Airlines, it’s because it folded in part due to labor issue from striking workers. BTW, EA was once the largest airline in the free world. The Guild may very well take down the TV industry.
