Is this why you’re not getting hired?

Immature Business WomanAt SnagAJob.com, people often ask us why they aren’t hearing back from employers after they send in their applications. Don’t forget that the job market is highly competitive right now and hiring managers may just be overwhelmed with applications.

If, however, your work history is up to date, you have lots of relevant experience and you’ve applied to many places, you might have to take a closer look at your online job seeker profile. Specifically, look at your email address. We see a lot of job seekers who use personal email addresses that are weird, cheesy or just plain inappropriate. When hiring managers see an email address like “sexyfangs47@address.com,” they are going to toss that job application in the NO WAY pile.

The email address you use for your job search…..

  • Should not be shared with anyone else. If you and your spouse share a personal email address, that’s fine – but get a new address to use when applying for jobs. Employers hesitate to send job-related emails to “DebandJohn4Eva” – plus, you will experience technical problems if you both sign up on SnagAJob.com using the same email address.
  • Should not be sports-related. You might be proud of your RaidersRule09 email address, but what if the hiring manager is a 49ers fan?
  • Should not be cute. A cutesy email address will make you appear unprofessional and immature. No teddy bears, unicorns or itty bitty kitties. No Elmo or SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • Should never, ever, include the word “lick.” We are not kidding. We have seen this. You will not get the job.

Instead, use an email address that is simple – not clever, not funny, not racy. We suggest your first initial and last name plus a number (not your birth year, unless you want employers to know exactly how old you are).
