It’s hard to believe that it’s been seven years since the brutal attacks of 9/11 shook the country and instilled fear into so many Americans. But the tragedy of that one day revived a sense of community and hope in so many of us that the lives lost that day were certainly not in vain.
After Sept. 11, many Americans followed a calling to serve in a way they had never done before. In an effort to prevent future attacks, thousands of new jobs were created, such as airport security, border patrol and law enforcement. And thousands of men and women found themselves not only employed, but working to make the lives of their neighbors safer.
Others decided to give back by forgoing high-paying jobs and dedicating their time to public service. The Peace Corps saw applications rise 80 percent in the years following the attacks, and Teach for America, a program that recruits teachers for inner-city schools, became more competitive than ever.
That day taught us to depend on each other and do all that we can to help others in need. Seven years later, these jobs serve as their own memorial for the men and women who lost their lives, and a way for us to give back in their honor.

If you could choose to be any superhero, who would it be? Would you stay true to your hard-working roots and choose Spidey - and the alter-ego of a modest news photographer? Or would you super size your lifestyle and your bank account as Bruce Wayne and the Dark Knight? (If so, you might want to hire an accountant.)
In yet another summer awash in big screen superhero hysteria, it’s fun to play this little game. And the Guardian has a cool quiz to make the super decision a bit easier – and more interactive.
So before you try on bedazzled tights or paint yourself green, take this safer approach. And heck, maybe there’s a superhero out there whose alter-ego already shares a job with you. Then again, considering how many of these larger-than-life figures spend their days as billionaire industrialist playboys, maybe not.

Summer has officially begun, which means you’re probably living it up by the pool, zipping around on roller coasters or racking up your credit card balance at the local mall. And that’s all well and good until the bills for all your summer fun come in the mail and you’re left wondering, “How am I going to pay for all this stuff?”
That’s a great question. And here’s a great answer: Get a job. But not just any job. All the pleasantries of summer also bring really fun jobs where you can make money and still enjoy the time you have off from school—or at the very least, get a great tan. Below you’ll find a list of the top five summer jobs that don’t require a lot of experience and come with some great benefits. So put down the remote and take off your shades long enough to read up on how to score some major green.
Lifeguard. Lifeguards get to hang out in the sun and get a nice summer glow while interacting with the public every day. You can usually expect to receive free admission to the pool when you’re not on duty, and maybe even a couple passes for guests. And you can’t beat a cold ice cream sandwich from the snack bar at the end of your shift. Just make sure to load up on SPF—“lobster red” isn’t a color you want to sport at summer social events this year.
Retail associate. In retail jobs, you can beat the heat in an air conditioned environment, and probably get to see your buddies shopping around as well. You’ll be the first to discover this summer’s latest fashions by taking a peek at merchandise in the stock room before it hits the floor. And the real perk? Most retailers offer an employee discount, so you can stock up on flip-flops and beach cover-ups to wear when you’re off the clock for way less dough.
Restaurant employee. Whether you’re greeting and seating guests or taking orders and serving, restaurant jobs are great for all you people-persons out there. No chance of sunburn here—you can enjoy a climate-controlled work environment with coworkers your age to keep you entertained. Keep your customers’ stomachs full and their faces smiling, and you can usually expect a nice tip to line your pockets. Not to mention, most restaurants give their workers free or discounted meals, so dig in.
Bartender. If you’re going to be at the bar anyway, why not get paid for it? Have fun while taking orders and mixing cocktails, and collect tips to buy drinks for all your friends. Just kidding. Speaking of friends, with bartender jobs you can join them as soon as your shift is over to enjoy the rest of your night on the other side of the bar.
Camp counselor. Do you like to be outdoors, play games all day and roast marshmallows by a campfire at night? We thought so. Camp counselors are like older siblings who get to play with younger kids and participate in fun activities like the balloon toss, Marco Polo and macaroni art. You’ll get tons of exercise and even more arts and crafts to bring home at the end of the summer for your refrigerator door. Mom will be so proud.
There you have it—the top five summer jobs you can’t afford to miss out on. Now all you have to do is turn off the cartoons and get out there to apply before summer’s over. So grab your favorite sunglasses and start your summer job search now.
If you ask any 5-year-old what he wants to be when he grows up, chances are you’ll get an answer like “Spider-Man” or “The Hulk.” And while that may not be entirely possible, you’ve got to give them props for dreaming big. Summer movies like “Ghost Busters” and “Superman Returns” depict people doing jobs out of the realm of possibility—but you have to admit, catching ghouls and poltergeists for a living would be a pretty sweet gig.
Andy Sachs, Anne Hathaway’s character in “The Devil Wears Prada,” was the envy of girls everywhere with her glamorous, jet-setting job of attending runway shows and wearing designer fashions. Did this inspire you to put down your Vogue and apply for a summer internship with a clothing designer?
“Anchorman” may not portray the journalism industry in the most accurate light, but it sure is hilarious. Despite the pressure to be the best local news station in San Diego, these guys have fun at work. You can’t help but wish your coworkers were more like Ron Burgundy and Brick Tamland—when is the last time your office broke out into a harmonious rendition of “Afternoon Delight?”
Whether you escape the pressures of your current job by imagining yourself as a superhero who saves women and children in distress, or you made the move to a real job after a summer movie date, we want to hear about it. Click on “Add a Comment” below and share your summer movie dream jobs here.
Buy a 10-gallon hat, and save a cowboy supply store.
All of economics can really be boiled down to that. And since Uncle Sam has been stroking tax rebate checks – 57 million since May – many American workers have put that money back in circulation instead of hiding it under their waterbed mattresses.
Since tax rebates have been signed, sealed, delivered and cashed, retail sales have jumped up 1 percent, according to the Commerce Department. That may not seem like a heck of a lot, but just consider how much money gets spent at your local Wal-Mart in one weekend. Now divide this by 100. That’s still a lot of Dale Jr. lunchboxes. OK, now multiply that by all the stores in all the land, and it’s a real lot. (By the way, Wal-Mart reported a 1.21 percent rise in sales in May, the best performance since March of 2007). That 1 percent rise in retail sales is also a pretty big deal considering many financial experts are saying that we’re drowning in recession.
So what does all this mean for America’s hourly job seekers and workers? The more money we pump into stores, the more workers we need to accommodate that business. So buying that shiny belt buckle sporting your last name could mean a new job for someone else.
Which hourly workers are mostly likely to be showing off well-earned bling bling or perfect credit scores?
Sales representatives, who make an average hourly wage of $27.64. Forbes.com recently partnered with SnagAJob.com to determine the highest paying – and most plentiful – hourly jobs. And despite the current economic sob story, the results are pretty darn encouraging.
Did you know that customer service jobs and auto technician jobs average $17.54 and $14.93 per hour, respectively? That’s enough to grab a cool new Bluetooth headset or pimp your own ride.
The gang from “Beverly Hills 90210” chilled at The Peach Pit when the going got tough. The ladies from “The Hills” crash at mommy and daddy’s million dollar vacation pads when money can’t buy happiness. And when President Bush gets bummed over his approval rating, he can golf, fish and play the Risk board game deep in the heart of his Crawford, Texas ranch.
Everyone needs somewhere to hang out and relax. To reflect and move forward. And now America’s hourly workers and job seekers have Off the Clock. Think of it as yoga for your paycheck. Sure, the beanbag chairs and the old school “Donkey Kong” arcade game haven’t arrived yet, but please make yourself comfortable.
